If ever a bike resembled your most cherished mix tape compilation, the Hightower is it. Featuring our lower-link mounted shock design, updated, adjustable geometry, this “Engineering Best Of...” assembles some of our biggest design pleasers into one belter of a road-trip companion.
The Hightower has been a does-it-all-well trail bike since its inception. More manoeuvrable than its longer-travel sibling, the Megatower, and more at home in the steep-and-chunky than its snappy cousin Tallboy, Hightower excels when the route covers ‘all points in between,’ and descents come courtesy of some big-ass climbs. The VPP suspension’s lower-link-mounted shock creates a nearly linear leverage curve, meaning it mops up bumps of all sizes and maintains the kind of progressively normally reserved for our V10 DH bike!
140mm of rear travel complemented by a 150mm front end gives Hightower just a bit more front and rear travel over the first generation model. Combined with a slacker 65-degree head tube angle, the Hightower still sits squarely in the Goldilocks zone, but with a touch more “Oh sh*t get me out of here” capability when the porridge gets too hot!
Balancing stiffness and weight savings in all the right places is a hallmark of all Santa Cruz carbon frames and the Hightower flies the flag yet higher. The advanced composite chassis tracks well across all trail surfaces, holds a line, and is reactive to rider directions while isolating pedal-influenced inputs.
The Hightower also has a bonus disc to heighten the experience—the flip chip. In the High setting, the BB height is a little higher for those tricky tech trails and/or when Plus sized tires are required. In the Low position the shock rate is more progressive, to provide additional bottom-out resistance. Whatever mood you’re in, the tone of the Hightower can be adapted to meet your individual taste.
And speaking of taste, there’s a room for a water bottle inside the main frame and a threaded BB for convenience. There’s refined cable routing for better shifting performance, simpler installation, and no cable rub. On top of that, there’s a tailgate shuttle guard, down-tube protector, shock fender, and noise-canceling chain-stay protector keeping things quiet.

The Megatower is the fusion of big wheels and the biggest-hitting suspension system. It’s a modern day brawler, as suited to diehard racers as it is to riders wanting to conquer their hometown trails.
Tracing its roots to the Hightower, and now featuring the lower link-driven VPP suspension derived from the V10, the Megatower is the most capable, confidence-inspiring 29er trail bike in our line-up. The lower-link mounted shock configuration – designed for compatibility with both air and coil shocks – provides a progressive shock rate that has unmatched traction and bottom out resistance, making it ideal for taming the longest descents and rowdiest hits.
In order to make the Megatower stride confidently across the globe it has an enormous amount of clever adjustability hidden in its bones. A tidy and concealed flip chip in the lower-link adjusts bottom bracket height and changes progressivity of the rear suspension. A second, in the rear dropouts, allows for a 10mm fore-aft adjustment in chainstay length to dial in the rider’s rearward weight distribution - either set for play or for stability. The flip chips are a robust mechanism for riders looking to tune their ride according to their needs without compromising reliability and durability. No wackadoo mousetraps and frail proprietary shocks here.
The Megatower isn’t all fight and fury, it’s smart and savvy too. It has a sharp, 76-degree seat tube angle for winching to the top of the kinds of descents where having a roomier cockpit and a 65-degree head tube angle will come in handy. And you can still carry around a full water bottle inside the frame (even with a piggyback shock), and the frame is well protected with a shock fender, shuttle guard, downtube protector and ribbed chainstay protector.

We took the fun-loving, shreddy spirit and adjustability of the beloved aluminum Chameleon and added a lighter, faster, more advanced version of the species. It’s a do-it-all hardtail that is as happy making the most of backyard booter (mis)adventures as it is fully-loaded with camp gear and a color-matched dangle mug.

The RIDE-9™ adjustment system allows riders to quickly fine-tune their geometry and suspension with a pair of Allen keys. Nine configurations are possible thanks to two interlocking chips. Suspension and geometry setup are complex art forms with huge variations in rider style, preference, terrain, and ability. We do recommend the use of professional services, but we also believe that learning to dial in your own bike is the best way to fully understand its performance. THE LOW DOWN ON THE NEW HIGHTOWER LT
The Hightower roared onto the scene in early 2016, capturing the attention of everyone looking for the speed that big wheels deliver in big terrain. Not long after, the exacting Scotsman, Mark Scott, came to Santa Cruz to do some pre-season testing, curious about the Hightower's ability to race at the highest level. He left convinced, and decided to campaign the entire 2016 season on one. Midway through the season, he came to us with a request to eke more travel out of the bike. The stock 135mm wasn't quite enough to maintain his speed on some of the rougher tracks.
Our engineering team designed a new set of links that pushed travel to 146mm at the expense of some compatibility, but because Mark's setup was a known variable, we could be very precise. We machined two sets on site, gave one to Mark, and the other to Iago Garay, a racer much more likely to take the fun line than tuck for speed.
As the Enduro World Series season wore on, Mark continued to get more comfortable (read: faster) on the bike, and the project got a bit more serious. The links went through a few iterations to find a balance of spring rate, travel, and shock compatibility. Toward the end of 2016, it became apparent that the best way to get the performance and travel required was to design a new swingarm to pair with the links, like we did with the V10. At this point the bike got a name—Hightower LT—and we pushed the travel to a full 150mm.
Hightower LT is designed for maximum speed in the biggest mountains. It's truly race-bred, its design the result of the demands of racing at the EWS, Crankworx, and Andes Pacifico. When the time came to decide on bikes for the 2017 season, there was zero question from any of the Santa Cruz-SRAM Enduro Team, and the EWS-themed bikes got the long links. Starting from the EWS in Wicklow, they've been racing on Wicklow Green production bikes—savvy internet commenters noticed the post-mount rear straightaway.
The LT's geometry is extremely close to the regular Hightower, as the bikes share a front triangle. The increased travel means the reach is slightly (7mm) shorter, the head angle a half-degree slacker, and the seat angle a half-degree slacker, as well. The rear triangle retains the dual upright design, but adds a post-mount rear brake. Unlike the Hightower, you can't run 27.5+ tires in the LT, and there's no flip chip to change the suspension. Santa Cruz Bicycles was founded in 1993 in a space the size of a single car garage in the Seabright Cannery, in Santa Cruz California. Our first bike, the Tazmon, was a single pivot dual suspension bike that rattled established sensibilities and helped define our then- ethos of "simply advanced." That bike was the cornerstone for a brand that was founded on the notion of doing things our own way in order to build the best. We have been rattling sensibilities ever since.
We now manufacture 16 models of mountain bike which includes a full women's Juliana range. Made from either carbon fiber or aluminum, we cover everything from hardtails to 8.5" travel downhill machines. We offer two suspension technologies; efficient single-pivot designs on certain aluminium bikes, and our advanced VPP (Virtual Pivot Point) technology on all high end models. VPP bikes are available with a wide range of component and suspension options to choose from, each hand-assembled to order in our California factory. Every one of our bikes is the distillation of our desire to ride and build the highest performance mountain bikes in the world. No more, no less.
We could get all touchy feely here and talk about how we are committed and impassioned riders, and how we love bikes so much that it somehow elevates us into something unique, but that's kind of common fodder for these "about" tabs on bike company websites. EVERYONE working in this industry should be committed and impassioned. It takes that kind of commitment to try and build the perfect bike. Still, we think we chase that vision harder, smarter and sometimes a bit weirder than the others.
